Danish born Mzungu Kichaa grew up in Africa. His eclectic life journey is reflected in his vibrant sound, shaped by the diverse musical traditions he has encountered in the different places he grew up. The award-winning artist is considered one of the most popular touring acts in East Africa and is steadily gaining popularity on the international scene with his unique interpretation of the Tanzanian genre, Bongo Flava.
When Mzungu Kichaa released his debut album ”Tuko Pamoja” in 2009, all his songs were in Swahili. In December 2012, he released an EP titled "Hustle", which includes his first songs in English and resulted in a nomination for a Danish Music Award in the category "Best World Track".
“For my new release I decided to share my story with my non-Swahili speaking fans by writing in English. Hustle is a project of self-discovery in search of my sound and identity. It represents the universal fight for an existence and a plea to never give up your dreams.” – Mzungu Kichaa
The "unplugged" concert is a rare opportunity to get close to Mzungu Kichaa as he performs acoustic arrangements of his work. The Slipway waterfront concert is a free farewell concert before heading off on the European tour which includes concerts in Germany, Denmark, Holland and the United Kingdom. The performance starts at sunset. To book a table please call 0762 883 321.
Sponsored by Ndovu, The Waterfront and Caravan Records.
Jagwa is without a shadow of a doubt one of the biggest names on the international scene at the moment to come out of Tanzania. The group has rocked tens of thousands at big European festivals such as Roskilde and the west has dubbed their style "African Street Punk". It is a great honour for the Beat Festival to present this group as the headlining act, at the hight of their international career.
Mzungu Kichaa released his new release HUSTLE in December 2012. The release has received good reviews and has also been featured on radio stations in Europe and America. The new release features his first releases in English, yet still holds on to his unique interpretation of Bongo Flava. Mzungu Kichaa has not performed in Dar es Salaam for a while, due to tours elsewhere, including concerts in Kenya, Uganda and Europe. His appearance is a rare opportunity to catch Mzungu Kichaa on his homeground with his band Bongo Beat.
Ngwair took the industry by storm with his numerous collaborations and his hit single "Ghetto Langu". He went on to achieve many hits including "Mikasi", "She Got A Gwan" and his collaboration with Fid Q titled “CNN”. Mangwair is also a respected freestyle rapper and has worked extensively with P Funk at Bongo Records throughout his career.
Point 5 is lyricist and freestyle rapper from Tanzania who grew up in Sweden. His skills on the mic and his ability to freestyle to any type of music are comparable to the likes of the Roots. Point 5 has left a successful career in Sweden and will hopefully make his mark on the Tanzania hiphop scene too. Tongight he will be featuring and collaborating with Mangwair and Mzungu Kichaa together with The Beat Festivals house band Bongo Beat.

Burkina Electric is a group of six musical artists from Burkina Faso, Germany and Austria. The band is based in New York City, USA. The Austrian composer and percussionist Lukas Ligeti, with singer Mai Lingani and guitarist Wende Blass from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso formed the band.
Burkina Electric’s music could be best described as electric world music, a mix of traditional African music, Afro-Pop and modern dance with traditional elements, combined with “Electronica” and concepts of the European avant-garde. The outcome of this mix might sound a bit exotic, but it can well compete with European House or Drum & Bass.
Atongo Zimba learned to play the koliko from his grandfather in Ghana. He travelled to Lagos, Nigeria where he found a home in the Fela Kuti Compound for two years. He released four albums and also toured two times to Europe.
Since 2003 Atongo Zimba is based in the UK. Savannah Breeze (2005) and Barefoot in the Sand (2007) are his two international released albums. Atongo composes and sings in three African languages and English. His songs feature themes like power and respect in inter-personal and inter-ethics relationships, everyday life issues, romantic love and spirituality. At the moment he works with the Ghanaian band Sankune to build on the sounds of his boyhood using traditional instruments.
